Acetate-based products for de-icing and snow melting on municipal roads
Municipal de-icing agent producers, and buyers of road maintenance goods, have access to raw ingredients such as potassium acetate and potassium formate. Solid raw materials are easier to formulate into goods that are dispersed, whereas liquid raw materials may be employed in products that are sprayed on. Product compositions and application rates should be decided by roadway temperature, pavement material and runoff needs.

I. Solid Potassium Acetate (Industrial Grade ≥99%)
Application Spot spreading on important highways, ramps and junctions. Can be used in combination with motorised snow removal equipment.
Material properties: The solid shape allows targeted distribution. Verification of freezing point of the actual formulation, compatibility with road surface materials, and test findings on corrosiveness toward road auxiliary facilities.
Recommendations: Establish application rate depending upon the particular formulation of the de-icer, temperature of the road surface and spreading or spraying equipment utilised. Test for low temperature performance and material compatibility before use.
Precautions Very hygroscopic, keep in a sealed dry atmosphere. Over dose will raise the expense of run off treatment. The dosage must be closely regulated.
II. Liquid Potassium Acetate (Industrial Grade, 50%)
Application: Preventive road spraying and localised de-icing after precipitation.
Material properties: The liquid form makes prophylactic spraying possible. Use low temperature viscosity, spray uniformity, and post-application pavement skid resistance tests
Application rate should be depending on the individual formulation of the de-icing agent, road surface temperature and spreading or spraying equipment employed. Test for low temperature performance and material compatibility before use.
Precautions: In cold, low temperatures, insulate container to avoid increased viscosity from compromising spraying effectiveness. After opening, keep in a sealed container to prevent moisture absorption and dilution.
III. Liquid Potassium Formate (Industrial Grade ≥75%)
Application: For essential road sections in very cold climates. Check the temperature of the road surface and the measured freezing point of the product.
Material Characteristics: In very cold places the choice of product should be based on tested freezing point and the actual temperature of the road surface and the application rates and re-freezing periods should be documented on site.
Usage recommendations: Determine the pace at which a specific formulation of the de-icer is applied, the temperature of the road surface and the equipment used for spreading or spraying; Test for low temperature performance and material compatibility before usage.
Note: It costs more than potassium acetate and is used mainly on crucial areas of the road. To avoid reduction of the active ingredients concentration, it should be kept in a sealed container to prevent absorption of moisture.
IV. Environmentally friendly, chloride-free snow-melting agent (freezing point: -15°C to -60°C)
Application: For de-icing of municipal roads, the solid and liquid forms and their respective working temperature ranges have to be distinguished.
The model determines how the properties of the raw materials affect the composition of the blended deicing agent and how well it works at low temperatures. Check the labels, test results and rules about how to use green spaces and rivers.
Advice on how to use it: Choose the application rate based on the type of deicer, the temperature of the road surface, and the equipment used for spreading or spraying. Before you use it, make sure it works well at low temperatures and with other materials.
Note: Freezing points vary widely with different models; pick the relevant model according to local temperature. Store in a moisture proof setting to avoid caking and loss of efficacy.

Applicable Scenarios for Raw Materials
Potassium acetate and potassium formate can be used in formulations for municipal road de-icing agents. Solid and liquid products are suitable for different preparation methods; the low-temperature performance of the finished product, its impact on road skid resistance, and its effects on green spaces and water bodies should be evaluated based on the specific formulation.
