Drilling Solid Potassium Formate for Oilfield Drilling — High-Purity Formate Brine Solution for HPHT Wells
Drilling Solid Potassium Formate (CAS No. 590-29-4, HCOOK) is a white crystalline organic salt engineered for high-performance drilling and completion fluid systems. With a molecular weight of 84.12 and a density of 1.91 g/cm³, it dissolves completely in water to form a solids-free clear brine reaching densities up to 1.57 g/cm³ (13.1 lb/gal). Produced by Shanxi Zhaoyi Chemical Co., Ltd. — a company with more than 30 years of expertise in the acetate sector and an annual capacity of 150,000 tonnes — this product has ≥99.0% purity, 253 g/100 ml water solubility at 20°C and thermal stability of more than 180°C. It is formulated as a chloride free shale inhibitor, wellbore stabiliser and freezing point depressant for High Performance Water Based Mud (HPWBM) in challenging oilfield settings.

What Makes Potassium Formate the Right Choice for Modern Drilling?
Today's drilling operations face three critical challenges: shale instability, formation damage, and thermal degradation in extreme conditions. Drilling Solid Potassium Formate directly addresses all three.
The potassium ions (K⁺) in formate brine offer exceptional clay inhibition, so shale hydration and borehole collapse is avoided – without the high chloride burden and environmental issues of potassium chloride. This is quite important if you have to secure delicate structures.
The brine is totally free of particulates, eliminating pore clogging of the reservoir pay zone. Brine drilling fluid results in much less formation damage than barite-weighted muds, allowing you to optimise hydrocarbon recovery rates in productive intervals.
Potassium formate is very useful in high pressure, high temperature conditions such in HPHT wells. It gives biopolymers thermal stability and maintains fluid systems operating reliably over 200 °C (392 °F) – levels at which most polymer fluids would start to break down.
Key Product Characteristics
High Purity, Consistent Dissolution
Premium-grade purity of ≥97.0% ensures a uniform dissolution rate and predictable brine density every time you prepare a new batch. Inconsistent purity from substandard suppliers is one of the most common causes of drilling fluid performance failures — you simply cannot afford that risk downhole.
Exceptional Thermal Stability
Unlike acetate-based fluids, which dissolve to generate carbonate precipitates at high temperature, potassium formate is chemically stable to 210 °C. This makes it a trusted formate brine drilling fluid in HPHT well conditions where fluid integrity is of paramount importance.
Does Not Support Bottom Hole Equipment
Chloride and bromide brines are infamous for corroding tubulars and downhole equipment. Potassium formate is intrinsically non-corrosive to carbon steel, which extends the life of the equipment and reduces well maintenance expenses during the life of the project.
Solids-Free, Low-ECD Performance
Formate brines have lower rheological profiles than solids-laden muds. This translates to reduced friction losses, lower Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD), and significantly less risk of inducing mud losses in narrow fracture gradient windows — a critical advantage in deepwater and tight formation drilling.
Polymer Compatibility
Potassium formate is used to increase heat stability of biopolymers like Xanthan Gum. When full yield is needed, pre-hydrating the polymers in fresh water before addition of the formate concentrate is advised. It is also compatible with most common drilling-fluid lubricants and filtration-control additives.

Application Scenarios
Drilling Solid Potassium Formate performs across a broad range of oilfield and industrial applications:
Oilfield Drilling & Completion Fluids
It is the primary use case. As a potassium formate drilling brine manufacturer, Shanxi Zhaoyi Chemical supplies product suitable for vertical wells, directional wells, horizontal wells, and extended-reach drilling (ERD) programs. Its low plastic viscosity and high inhibition capacity make it effective across complex well geometries.
HPHT Well Programs
Potassium formate for HPHT wells is the way to go since traditional fluid systems can’t provide the thermal and chemical stability needed for deep gas wells, geothermal drilling and high-pressure exploration wells. No solids management, fluid densities from 1.0 to 1.57 SG supported by simple dissolving.
Completion and Workover Fluids for Reservoirs
Formation damage is a significant issue while drilling into the pay zone or during workover operations. Solids free formate brine minimises damage due to invasion and allows for quicker, cleaner well clean-up after completion.
Uses in Industry
Besides oilfields, potassium formate is used as a reducing agent for printing and dyeing, camouflage acid for leather processing, early strength agent for cement, road de-icing agent and a micronutrient in leaf fertiliser formulations.

Packaging, Storage & Supply
Packaging Options
· 25 kg moisture-proof plastic woven bags (PE inner liner + PP outer bag)
· 1,000 kg jumbo ton bags for bulk logistics
Potassium formate is hygroscopic and hence must be packed in double-lined moisture-proof packaging. All bags should be kept in a dry, well-ventilated warehouse, away from dangerous chemicals, away from heat and moisture sources.
Supply Capability
With an annual production capacity of 150,000 tons of acetate and formate products across a 27,000 m² facility, Shanxi Zhaoyi Chemical supports both regular project volumes and large bulk orders. Standard lead time is 5–7 working days, with in-stock orders dispatched within 24 hours.

FAQ
Q: Why choose potassium formate over potassium chloride (KCl) for drilling?
A: Both prevent K+ clay, but potassium formate gives a much greater density of brine: up to 1.57 SG, vs only 1.16 SG for KCl. It’s also far less corrosive and discharges much lesser chloride, making it the preferable alternative where environmental compliance is important.
Q: Can this product be applied straight to an active mud system?
A: Yes. It is helpful as a density enhancer for fast weighting up fluids. However, it is quite hygroscopic and a high shear hopper should be used when adding to avoid the formation of undissolved clumps in the system.
Q: What is the effect of potassium formate on ECD in tight fracture gradient windows?
A: Solids-free formate brines have lower plastic viscosity and yield point than solids-laden muds. This minimises the friction losses in the annulus, reduces ECD and lessens the possibility of inducing lost circulation – a key plus in deepwater and depleted reservoirs.
Q: Is it compatible with other Horizontal and Directional drilling programs?
A: Yeah. Formate brine drilling fluid has low rheology and strong inhibition, which makes it a great option for horizontal wells, directional wells, and extended-reach projects where borehole stability and ECD control are crucial.
Q:What are the storage requirements for the oilfield?
A: Storage: Store in a cool, dry, ventilated place in sealed double-lined moisture-proof bags. Store away from heat. Do not store near dangerous substances. Open bags should be resealed promptly. Absorption of moisture causes caking which limits dissolving efficiency.
Q: What is the minimum order quantity and the delivery time?
A: Standard lead time approx. 5-7 working days for production orders. Products in stock may be sent within 24 hours. Available in both 25 kg and tonne bag forms. Contact us for bulk pricing and logistical conditions
